We take a lot of pride in our state. We’ve proven we can do great things. And we believe we’re at our best when no one is left behind.
But in one area, our innovative spirit hasn’t come through - our tax code. It’s the most upside down in the nation. We ask the Washingtonians with the least to pay the most, while those at the top get a special deal.
We rely too much on sales taxes to fund the foundations our communities need to thrive. That means that working families and the middle class pay a far greater share of their income in taxes – as much as 7 times the rate the wealthiest pay. That’s completely upside down.
Washington is in last place, below every other state in our country. Our upside down tax code does not reflect our values.
So, if our system is upside down, how do we turn it right-side up? We start by cleaning up the hundreds of tax breaks and special deals that powerful interests and the wealthy have forced into the tax code.
Together, we can pass new rules that make the wealthy and powerful pay what they owe, we can invest more in our communities today, and we can build a better Washington for the next generation.
