Last June, we came closer to a government shutdown than ever before in Washington’s 128 year history. Why? The simple answer is Washington’s upside-down tax code.
Washington’s tax code is the most upside-down in the nation, asking those with the least to pay the most while the wealthiest get a special deal. Powerful special interests have jammed more than 700 wasteful tax breaks and loopholes into the tax code, rigging the system in their favor. Because of this, our public schools, infrastructure, and health care aren’t receiving critical resources, resulting in budget negotiations that nearly shut our state government down. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Thriving communities depend on things like great schools, modern infrastructure, and affordable healthcare, but we can’t get something for nothing. Our taxes pay for these key investments. They’re how we take care of our neighbors and our community. We need to stand up to powerful special interests, clean up the upside-down tax code, and take back our state so every community in Washington can thrive.
We made some progress during session and avoided a government shutdown, but we’ve got more work to do. We’re the All In For Washington campaign, a statewide effort to clean up the tax code. Together, we can fight for tax code that works for everyone.
